What you need to be shooting to defeat a given level of body armor:

Pistol calibers can be counted on to penetrate plasterboard and plywood and most home doors, but may be stopped by 2x4s. .223/5.56 will disintegrate red brick and can be counted on to penetrate cinder block with repeated hits. 7.62 will disintegrate cinder block and even penetrate tree trunkos. ...trunks (forgive my buggy Android phone's backspacing function). All calibers may penetrate a car door. Best place to take cover is behind the engine block or wheels. .50 BMG will shoot through a small building. if not a medium sized one. When bullets start flying, the best place to be is flat on the ground. If cover is nearby, crawl to it. If you have to cover distance to get to adequate cover (like in a ditch) then try to run in brief bursts of 3-4 seconds. Zig-zagging while you run is an optionif there is sniper fire. Playing dead may be another.

I welcome comments and contradictions.
